Abstract

The spectral properties of planetary nebulae near 10 ¿m are summarized. Those nebulae with strong dust emission near 10 μm can often be classified as oxygen- or carbon- rich by the detection of spectral signatures of dust grains whose formation depends upon the C/O ratio of the material in which they condense. The classification of pn as C or O rich according to their 8–13 μm spectra can be accomplished quickly and simply without recourse to detailed models, and provides a means of investigating abundances in objects which are difficult to study by other techniques. Some preliminary results on the properties of pn located near the Galactic centre are presented.
