Abstract
Low and high resolution ultraviolet spectra obtained with the IUE satellite offer a unique opportunity to study the properties of the nuclei of planetary nebulae (PNN) in a more direct way than has been possible in the past. While the low resolution data give the temperatures and luminosities -after proper correction of the observed fluxes for interstellar extinction-, the high resolution spectra allow to study line profiles from which one can derive e.g. wind velocities and estimates of the mass loss rates. Improved knowledge of the properties of the central stars is essential to constrain the ionization models for the surrounding nebular shells.
In this note we report results obtained from IUE and optical data for the two objects NGC 40 and NGC 6543.
