Abstract
Since the advent of 3-D seismic technology, with its requirement for increased positioning accuracy, much attention has been devoted to surface navigation quality control in an attempt to achieve absolute vessel positioning accuracy on the order of a few meters. What has been neglected, and deserves even greater attention, is the dynamic position over the ground of the seismic energy source (guns) and receivers (streamer mounted hydrophones). Knowledge of the vessel’s position is undeniably of great importance, but knowledge of the hydrophone positions is critical when it comes to trace-stacking and the resultant interpretation of seismic data.
