Part of the book series: NATO ASI Series ((ASIC,volume 201))

Abstract

The European Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) produces operational global forecasts every day from the initial state of the atmosphere at 12Z. The satellite data used in a global Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) system like the ECMWF operational system are described, as well as the analysis scheme which is implemented to assimilate the data. An assessment of the impact of the satellite data on the quality of the analysis and the forecast is performed. Finally several experiments and ideas, aiming at improving the use of satellite data in NWP, are presented or discussed.
