The Milky Way as a Galaxy

  • Conference paper

Part of the book series: Astrophysics and Space Science Library ((ASSL,volume 134))

Abstract

The physical conditions in the interstellar medium of the Milky Way are briefly reviewed. It is noted that the local interstellar medium shows relatively uniform abundances and dust/gas ratios; in fact recent measurements of the 12C/13C ratio indicate that the gas is homogeneous to better than 15%. Since we appear to live in an orderly system, observations of external galaxies similar to the Milky Way can provide useful insight into the nature of the interstellar medium of the Galaxy.
