On the Diagonal N-Representability Problem

Book cover Density Matrices and Density Functionals

Abstract

The removal of the N-electron wave function from many-body theory requires solution of the N-representability problem for the second-order reduced density matrix (RDM-2). This difficult problem, first explicitly formulated by A.J. Coleman [1], has not yet been resolved even in its weakened diagonal form. Very general results have been obtained by means of the theory of convex sets, [2]. It seems that the most interesting achievement attained along this line is Coleman’s theorem [3] showing that the reduced density matrix of a general AGP-function is extreme in the convex set of second order reduced density matrices.
