Abstract

After a brief review of the general situation concerning mass accreting compact stellar objects in binary systems we concentrate on a single source - Hercules X-1 - which is the best-known among all accreting neutron stars. In particular we shall discuss recent progress which has been made in understanding (1) the geometrical situation of the neutron star and its immediate surroundings and (2) the 35-day-cycle of the source.
