Fluid Phase Separations in Polymerizing Systems at Elevated Pressures

Book cover High Pressure Chemistry and Biochemistry

Part of the book series: NATO ASI Series ((ASIC,volume 197))

Abstract

Phase separations that tend to accompany polymerization reactions are reviewed from a classic thermodynamic standpoint. Both lower and upper critical miscibility may occur and are details of the same phenomenon, partial miscibility in its dependence on pressure and temperature. Since pressure plays a marked role, we discuss fluid phase equilibria in terms of a mean-field lattice gas equation of state capable of adequate descriptions of observed phenomena and of predictions of the influence of pressure, molar mass and polymer chain structure characteristics such as chain branching.
