Abstract
The 35-day cycle of the binary X-ray source Hercules X-1/HZ Herculis which was discovered by Uhuru (Tananbaum et al. 1972) has not yet been satisfactorily explained. Among the various mechanisms proposed, that of a precessing accretion disk obscuring the primary X-rays has been most successful (Gerend and Boynton 1976, Katz 1973, Roberts 1974, Petterson 1975, 1977). However, the physical feasibility of disk precession has been doubted (Papaloizou and Pringle 1982, Kondo et al. 1983).
