Abstract

The observational properties of gamma ray bursts — their time histories, energy spectra, statistical properties, and counterpart searches — are reviewed. The observational evidence for a neutron star origin is discussed. The characteristics of some of the time histories and energy spectra argue strongly in favor of such an origin, but firm evidence, say in the form of an identifiable counterpart, is still lacking.
