Abstract
A systematic comparison of observational constraints and theoretical results for the properties of Mira variables is in progress. The observed period-luminosity relation (Feast, M.W., MNRAS, 211, 51P, 1984), the requirement that the mass lie between the core mass (~0.6M⊙) and the main sequence progenitor mass (~1M⊙ at 200 days and ~2M⊙ at 400 days), and the period-mass-radius relation for a given mode suffice to constrain the gross stellar properties L, T and R. In Figure 1 the maximum shock amplitudes are compared with observed velocity amplitudes, assuming Δv/ve = 0.8 for fundamental mode and 0.4 for overtone pulsation (see Willson, this volume).
