Abstract

Luminous asymptotic giant branch stars are absent from this region of recent star formation in the LMC. If standard estimates are correct for the maximum mass star that can become an AGB star, it would seem that 2 to 5M stars spend little time in the Mira phase, and their evolution is rapidly truncated by depletion of the stellar envelope by mass loss.
