Abstract
Our understanding of the nature and evolutionary status of OH/IR stars has made tremendous progress in the last decade. Initial interest in twin peaked 1612 MHz OH sources was sparked by the discoveries of Wilson and Barrett (1968) and Eliasson and Bartlett (1969) of strong OH emission coincident with bright infrared sources. This led to the extensive OH surveys of IR sources (Wilson and Barrett 1972; Wilson, Barrett and Moran 1970) and observations of their infrared and stellar characteristics (Hyland et al. 1972; Harvey et al. 1974).
