Abstract
Sadi Carnot’s 1824 ‘Réflexions sur la Puissance Motrice des Machines à Feu’ is an extraordinary piece of scientific literature: a very short one, containing not a single mathematical formula. It turns an easily observed twin-faced fact into a far-reaching principle yielding, even today, an understanding and intercorrelation of innumerable phenomena. It seems that it was perhaps intended as a brochure for launching a company building steam engines.
