Abstract

Lee and Yang’s 1956 assumption that Fermi’s 1933 ‘weak interaction’ is not invariant under space reflection — ‘parity violating’, in the jargon — followed by Mrs Wu’s (Wu et al., 1957) experimental proof of the fact caused quite a shock; a shock wave, so to speak, the ripples of which are still felt today.
