Estimation of the Probability of Occurrence of Polymetallic Massive Sulfide Deposits on the Ocean Floor

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: NATO ASI Series ((ASIC,volume 194))

Abstract

Probabilistic methods for mineral resource evaluation previously developed for land-based polymetallic massive sulfide deposits in the Abitibi Volcanic Belt of the Canadian Shield are applied to occurrences of hydrothermal vents on the East Pacific Rise near 21°N. It is shown that volcanic and tectonic features on the ocean floor can be quantified for cells belonging to a grid and used to estimate probabilities of occurrence of the vents. The leverage and influence of multivariate cell observations on the estimated probabilities are also studied.
