Abstract

There is nowadays a large interest in studying reactions between ions (both positive and negative) and molecules in the gas phase. A major reason is that much can be learnt from such studies in the absence of solvent molecules and that in this way an insight can be obtained in both the intrinsic properties of the species involved and the rôle of solvent molecules. Another reason is that the instruments necessary for such studies undergo continuously further development and become more and more sophisticated, so that finer and more quantitative details of gas phase reactions can be uncovered.
