Abstract

Our perception of Wolf—Rayet stars has undergone a remarkable transformation over the past decade largely through the advent of new observations spanning a wide range of the electromagnetic spectrum, from X-rays to the radio, coupled to improvements in theoretical atmospheric and evolution models and the discovery and study of WR populations in external galaxies. It is no coincidence that this decade of change in perception has embraced the IUE era since UV spectroscopy has provided key data for advancing knowledge of this stellar class, and herein we discuss results from a broad range of IUE studies of WR stars that have contributed to the recent advances. A more general summary of the field can be found in IAU Symposium No. 99 — ‘WR Stars; Observations, Physics, Evolution’, (de Loore and Willis, 1982) and IAU Symposium No. 116 — ‘Luminous Stars and Associations in Galaxies’, (de Loore et al., 1986).
