Abstract

The very large body of data in the IUE data-banks will continue to be of enormous value to astronomers for many years beyond the termination of the satellite’s active life. However, the effective use of this valuable data archive requires that the user have some knowledge of the instrumentation and the techniques employed in data acquisition and processing. This article provides a brief overview for prospective users of IUE data who may not be very familiar with the IUE instrumentation or standard ‘Spectral Image Processing System’ (IUESIPS). In particular, we alert potential users to problems that may arise in the analysis and interpretation of their IUE data and direct them to sources of more detailed technical information, generally published in the IUE Newsletters.
