Abstract

The ultraviolet observations of quasars provide a direct measure of the ionizing non-thermal radiation in these objects and the fluxes of the resonance emission lines. These data provide information on the processes taking place close to the “central engine” which drives these luminous objects and also on the physical state of the gas which emits the line radiation and the dynamics of the region in which these lines are formed. The observations of quasars with the IUE thus provide an opportunity of not only studying these objects over a wide wavelength range, but also the possibility of comparing quasars at different epochs (i.e. study the evolution of quasar properties). Through observations of the absorption lines formed in the quasar spectra it is also possible to explore the intervening intergalactic space.
