Exploring the Universe with the IUE Satellite

Abstract

In this section, we review the work of IUE in investigating the hot luminous stars outside of our own Galaxy. Although it was not originally anticipated that such observations could even be made with IUE, they have been extensive and now represent a major data base in the study of OB stars. The investigations fall into three main categories, which are outlined separately below: OB star stellar winds in the Magellanic Clouds; X-ray and other massive binaries in the Magellanic Clouds; and the brightest hot stars in M31 and M33. In much of this work, observational discoveries have been unexpected, and to a significant extent they are still unexplained. Future work in both observation and theory will thus still determine the full significance of the pioneering work of IUE.
