Abstract

The adaptation of a mentally retarded person to a life in the community is an important issue that has been the focus of much scholarly research. Edgerton (1983) has reviewed the literature that attempts to assess such adaptation and reports that not only have multiple criteria been used for judging whether adaptation is successful or not, but also that there are disagreements about these findings. He concludes that “we know far too little about the processes of community adaptation to allow ourselves the illusion that we have already measured success or failure. It is far more likely that we will never know how to do so” (1983:141).
