Abstract
In previous chapters we have been concerned with mechanistic models of the reaction of ions with soil. Thus we have been concerned with both description and explanation. In the present chapter we are concerned solely with description — that is with choosing functions that can be used to reduce many observations to a few numbers that adequately describe the behaviour. As will be shown, this has further relevance to this book in that it also involves solving simultaneous equations using iterative methods.
