Abstract

Elasticity is a well developed theory and therefore cracks in elastic media are well understood. Only at an atomic scale, where the elasticity description breaks down, details of the atomic positions near sharp crack tips are a matter of discussions, still. Correspondingly, a sound physical model for crack advance is available within the scope of continuum elasticity: The elastic energy release rate due to crack growth must be equal to the energy required for forming the new surfaces.
