Abstract
The role of sulfur in the passive film formation on nickel and nickel-base alloys has been extensively studied by using radiotracer and surface analysis techniques (AES and ESCA). The main conclusions are the following:
-
1.
The effect of adsorbed sulfur is independent of its origin: preadsorption from gas or by surface segregation, surface enrichement by selective metal dissolution, adsorption from the electrolyte.
-
2.
Sulfur increases the rate of metal dissolution in the active range of potentials.
-
3.
Sulfur inhibits the formation of the passive film.
-
4.
Sulfur induces the irrevėrsible breakdown of the passive film to give localized or generalized corrosion. The mechanisms of these effects are discussed.

A similar presentation of sections I to V was given by P. Marcus at an EPRI Workshop on the role of sulfur species on the degradation of alloy 600 and similar alloys, Baltimore, 17–18 october 1985. Section VI is based on chapter IV of the thesis of H. Talah, presented at the University of Paris, 5 mai 1986.
