Abstract
Carbon and low alloy steels are susceptible to stress corrosion cracking (SCC) and corrosion fatigue (CF) in high temperature high pressure pure water. Mechanistically this susceptibility has recently been connected to MnS-inclusions of the steels, which can initiate cracking in SCC tests (1–4) and contribute to enhancement of crack growth both in CF (5–7) and in SCC tests (4). The role of MnS-inclusions in CF-crack growth has been schematically demonstrated in Fig. 1. Since in this model the dissolution of the uncovered MnS-inclusions and the change of local environment inside the crack is of primary importance, the tests in the environments believed to simulate the conditions near dissolving MnS-inclusions have been started. In the following the slew strain rate tests (SSRT) of an A 508 pressure vessel steel are presented in a range of corrosion potentials at 85° C in MnS-saturated pure water.
