Chemistry and Physics of Fracture

Part of the book series: NATO ASI Series ((NSSE,volume 130))

Abstract

Fracture, the more or less abrupt separation of a solid under stress, is of unquestionable technological importance. In load bearing structures, it is to be avoided, while in some other circumstances, such as in machining, rock drilling, demolition, etc., it is to be promoted under control. In either case, for its control, the fracture phenomenon is in need of as precise a quantitative understanding as is possible. This understanding requires different but usually complementary approaches. Here, in this overview, we will only give an overall perspective of the phenomenon, which will be discussed in much greater detail and with more precision in the specific contributions by others that follow.
