Abstract
In contrast to all other metals, mercury is in the liquid state at room temperature and has a relatively high vapour pressure. As mercury or mercury-contaminated raw materials are used in numerous industrial processes, mercury is often released into waste water and waste air. Mercury emissions mainly originate from the following processes /1/:
-
installations for fossile fuel and waste combustion
-
alkalichloride-electrolyses according to the mercury-cell process
-
battery and catalyst factories
-
production of mercury-containing chemicals and fungicides
-
production of electric switches, measuring instruments and fluorescent lamps
