Abstract
Aqueous suspension of the solid waste (20% by weight) obtained from wastewater treatment plant of pulp and paper factory, SEKA, in Tasucu, Turkey, have been treated with acetic acid and sodium hydroxide (15% by weight of solid) at 250°C, 300°C, and 350°C in a high pressure autoclave for one hour. The reaction mixture was separated into solid-oil and aqueous layers. The aqueous layers were diluted with water and then subjected to ozonation.
Ozonation has been carried out in an ozonation reactor for 120 min. During ozonation about 20 mL samples were driven out at 20 minuteintervals. The B0Ds, COD, and pH of the samples were determined.
It was found that pH, COD, and BODs values of the aqueous layers were decreasing with ozonation time. The drop in BODs values is higher than the drop in COD. This shows that the ozonation causes first the oxidation of the biodegradable substances. It can be concluded that ozonation can be applied for wastewater treatment if the organic compounds dissolved are biodegradable.
