Utilisation of phosphorus and potassium from animal manures on grassland and forage crops

Animal Manure on Grassland and Fodder Crops. Fertilizer or Waste?

Part of the book series: Developments in Plant and Soil Sciences ((DPSS,volume 30))

Abstract

A review is presented of experimental work to assess the phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) fertiliser value of animal manures, for grassland and forage crops.

Apparently conflicting information in the literature can often be, at least partly, accounted for by the specific conditions under which experiments are conducted. Agronomic and pot experiments have sometimes indicated a reduced short term efficiency of manures as sources of P and K but longer term studies have suggested that fertiliser and manure P and K can be regarded as equivalent.

Some current Dutch work on the effects of injection on the efficiency of slurry P and K is also described. Preliminary results suggest that grass uptake of P from injected slurry, is likely to be delayed until the second and third cut of a multi-cut system, whereas K is effective for all cuts.
