Abstract
This paper deals with the official and private uses of the ECU and with their respective contribution to the functioning of the European Monetary System (EMS) and, in a longer-term perspective, to the furthering of Europe’s monetary integration. In fact it concentrates more on the private ECU, for the simple reason that this unit has become a major eurocurrency in barely a few years, while the official ECU has not, so far, lived up to its aim of being a centrepiece of the European Monetary System. Moreover, the private ECU’s development potential seems more promising than that of the official ECU, at least in the near future.
