Abstract

Passive solar buildings must be designed according to the characteristics of the local climate. The case of buildings in the Mediterranean area (with Portugal as an example) is discussed in terms of what can and should be done to incorporate passive solar design, within the framework of the existing vernacular and modern architectural practices which favour massive construction techniques. A brief overall characterization of basic passive solar systems is included, as well as an overview of applicable design methods.

The role of thermal mass is emphasized, and the results of an experimental passive solar residence designed in accordance with the proposed methodologies are described.
