Review of Thermosyphon Solar Water Heaters

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: NATO ASI Series ((NSSE,volume 129))

Abstract

The significant advantages of thermosyphon solar water heaters in terms of simplicity, reliability, and cost have long been recognized. In addition, experimental studies have indicated that the thermal performance of thermosyphons is comparable to that of active systems.

In this review, thermosyphon solar water heaters are classified and the results from the experimental determination of system performance along with mathematical modelling are presented. Storage tanks with and without heat exchangers (direct and indirect systems) are considered. The literature on thermosyphon solar water heaters is reviewed and important results are discussed. Detailed consideration is given to the effects of reverse flow, stratification in the storage tank, flow resistance arising from various components, withdrawal of water from the storage tank, storage tank elevation, circulating fluid, etc.
