Abstract
The work of Giovanni Sartori implies that the establishment of a party system of polarized pluralism has important implications for the dynamics of party competition. In this paper empirical measures of polarized pluralism are developed for 14 party systems and compared to Sartori’s classification. Tests of the competitive implications support hypotheses associating polarized pluralism with ideological patterning by parties and peripheral turnover of party governments, but find no evidence of centrifugal electoral trends.
