Interstitial Techniques for Hyperthermia

Part of the book series: NATO ASI Series ((NSSE,volume 127))

Abstract

In recent years there has been a tremendous effort to design noninvasive hyperthermia systems that will bring the entire tumor volume to therapeutic temperatures without overheating normal tissues. This objective is quite difficult, and there are fundamental reasons associated with the physics of such devices that make it appear as if such an objective may not be achieved for many tumor sites. As a result there are a number of groups that have been considering interstitial techniques for hyperthermia. In this modality small implants about a millimeter in diameter are inserted in some type of array in the tumor volume, either percutaneously or at the time of surgery. Since brachytherapy (interstitial radiation therapy) is commonly used for treating both superficial and deep-seated tumors, interstitial hyperthermia can be given as an adjuvant treatment to the radiation therapy.
