Diffraction Studies of Halide Glasses

Halide Glasses for Infrared Fiberoptics

Part of the book series: NATO ASI Series ((NSSE,volume 123))

Abstract

A review is given of X-ray and neutron diffraction studies of halide and oxyhalide glasses with special emphasis on experimental techniques for the separation, or partial separation, of individual component correlation functions. These are particularly important in structural investigations of the complex multicomponent fluorozirconate and other heavy metal fluoride glasses which are the subject of the present workshop. The structures of heavy metal fluoride glasses are discussed in terms of the concepts of radius ratio and hole filling and a first order structural model is proposed based on a locally ordered random close packing. Several chain models have been suggested for these glasses but the extent of chain formation in real systems remains to be established.
