Abstract

The current status of development work on applications of infrared transmitting fibers in the field of gas sensing devices is reviewed with particular emphasis to fluorozirconate materials. Promising performance parameters, which might result by the incorporation of IR-fibers in optical detection schemes are indicated in comparison to conventional techniques. Fibre requirements regarding geometrical data, spectral attenuation, mechanical as well as environmental durability for future applications are summarized. The applicability of frequency modulation gas spectroscopy or evanescent wave gas spectroscopy is briefly outlined. Advantageous features of a methane detection system demonstrate the existence of a new application field of IR-fibers in remote gas spectroscopy.
