Abstract
In the study of circadian rhythms many approaches are available to the chronobiologist. These range from the relatively simple measurement of gross locomotor activity (Pittendrigh & Daan, 1976) to the sophisticated assessment of neuronal activity from multiunit recordings (Borsook et al, 1984). Electrophysiological techniques have been used for a number of years in order to study neuronal activity. An alternative approach to the study of this process is to look at neurotransmitter release and metabolism. In this chapter we shall describe the use of two techniques, in vivo voltammetry and intracerebral dialysis, used routinely in our laboratory to study the release and metabolism of 5-hydroxytryptamine (5HT) in vivo. Both of these techniques can be used in freely moving animals and are therefore ideally suited to the requirements of the chronobiologist. The two techniques will be dealt with separately and then followed by some general remarks.
