Abstract

The term, cognitive map, was coined by Tolman (1948) in response to the observation that rats demonstrated flexible, adaptive behavior in certain maze-learning situations. Since Tolman’s time, the term cognitive map has been applied to the mechanism involved in orientation in a larges-cale environment (Anderson, 1980; Downs & Stea, 1977; Neisser, 1976). However, it is also now being used to designate a specific kind of long-term memory storage system in which both spatial and nonspatial information is represented.
