Structural Control

Abstract

In recent years, different methods have been taken from Control Theory in order to develop active control systems for civil engineering structures. Classical feed-back control techniques have been used in [1–3]. The interest in improving the performance given by classical feedback control has led to the application of optimal control theory for structural control as considered in [4–7]. Since a matrix Ricatti equation has to be solved, the optimal control law applied in references [4–7] may not be useful for on-line control when the structure has many degrees of freedom. Active control by modal synthesis has been proposed in [8]. This technique consists of controlling independent specific dynamic modes after decoupling the structure’s equations of motion. An example, in which a linear optimal control is applied to each mode, may be found in [9]. However decoupling is possible only when the damping matrix verifies the orthogonality conditions.
