The Effect of Small Structural Changes on Optimized Active Control Systems

Structural Control

Abstract

The structural model used for designing an active control system is rarely accurate. Even if the model is accurate when the structure is originally built, small changes during the lifetime of the structure can destroy that accuracy. Because of this problem one major concern in the design of such a system is to minimize its sensitivity to variations in the structural model (e.g. [1]). Design for insensitivity will usually compromise the performance of the control system. Therefore, it is important to find the structural parameters that the control system is most sensitive to. Once these parameters are identified the designer of the control system has three options at his disposal. He can try to obtain more accurate values of the most troublesome parameters, he can redesign the control system to reduce the sensitivity or he can seek minor changes in the structure to reduce the sensitivity.
