Effects of Shear Deformation on the Onset of Flexural Failure in Symmetric Cross-ply Laminated Rectangular Plates

  • Chapter
Composite Structures 4

Abstract

An initial flexural failure analysis for symmetric cross-ply laminated simply supported rectangular plates is described. The analysis is based on a simple higher-order shear deformation plate theory (HSDT) and simple lamina and interlaminar shear failure criteria. Initial failure pressures and associated plate centre deflections are computed for CFRP plates. The computed values are compared with corresponding values derived from classical laminated plate theory (CPT). The comparison demonstrates that the neglection of the inherent shear flexibility of a laminated plate leads to an unconservative estimation of the failure pressure and a conservative estimation of the associated centre deflection. Even for moderately slender plates these under I over-estimations may be significant, e.g. for a three-layer square plate with a width—thickness ratio of 10 the difference amounts to about 10%.
