Abstract

Surface coatings lie both within the traditions of an ancient craft and on the leading edge of modern technology. Although surface coatings have been known since the dawn of mankind—as the cave paintings of Palaeolithic man in the Dordogne testify—and outdate all other technologies and most other crafts, the subject is still avidly pursued today in research laboratories throughout the world. This fact is not surprising.
