Some Aspects of Silane Technology for Surface Coatings and Adhesives

  • Chapter
Adhesion 11

Abstract

Organofunctional silanes of the general formula R-Si (OR’) are used extensively as adhesion promotors in the glass-fibre reinforced plastic and composite industries, and the literature reflects this interest [1–5]. This early and continued use is in recognition of the fact that the physical properties of glass reinforced composites are severely reduced in the presence of water. The deleterious effect of water on the adhesion of surface coacings to the substrate and the bond strength of adhesives, particularly to metals and glass, is now fully recognised [6–8] and the composite technology and experience is now being applied in these fields.
