Abstract
During the last 30 years, adhesive bonding has become an accepted method of industrial fastening. The many inherent advantages of adhesive assembly systems have led to their use in situations that have traditionally been the domain of welding or mechanical fastening. This chapter will describe how and why adhesives are used, discuss recent trends in their use, and consider possible areas for future adhesive application. A number of successful uses which illustrate the advantages of adhesive bonding and point the way to likely future developments will also be presented.
