Abstract
At this point, so many models, criteria and requirements have been presented that the reader is likely to be confused. The design task has been described (Chapters 3 and 5), requirements for a better CAD system have been discussed (Chapter 4), and some of the new approaches to interactive and automatic design systems have been considered (Chapter 6). Having got this far, the question ‘What makes a good CAD system?’ looks more, rather than less, complex. One way to simplify a complex problem is to decide on a clear goal: here the aim will be to sketch the outline of a specific CAD system which fits the requirements of designers.
