Abstract
One of the major disadvantages in carrying out research on H. irritans is the lack of a reliable culture technique for this fly species.
Previous attempts to culture the sheep headfly only resulted in a very low production of adult flies.
In order to carry out sensory physiology and behavioural tests and to ensure well defined and bacteriologically “clean” flies a reliable culture technique is a prerequisite.
Experiments were done to determine the oviposition habitat and to ensure high larval survival, pupation rate and fly emergence.
Diet and holding temperature clearly influenced all three parameters giving with Enchytraeus and 15°C a pupation percentage of 62.5 and a fly emergence of 38.5%.
As yet, despite several attempts, no successful copulations have been obtained.
