Abstract

It is an honor and a pleasure for me to join with you today to honor the memory of Professor Piet De Somer. We remember him with reverence and with affection for he was both a great scientist and a delightful friend, whom we all knew simply as Piet. Some might consider him a modern day Renaissance Man because his knowledge, his activities and his accomplishments were so diverse. He was a scientific researcher of distinction; the founder of two great institutions — the Rega Institute and the RIT Laboratories; a beloved teacher; and a great and distinguished rector of the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven. There are few among us who would excel or even match the achievements made by Professor De Somer in his single lifetime.
