Abstract

The procedure followed when diagnosing laryngeal cancer gained a dimension with the development of computer tomography. This technique can demonstrate submucosal tumour growth in an axial manner and detect gross cartilage destruction. This information is useful for staging advanced laryngeal carcinomas and for deciding whether radiation therapy or surgery is indicated. However, CT has its limitations, especially in providing a three-dimensional representation of the tumour and in detecting minor cartilage invasion. Coronal and sagittal reconstruction, obtained from standard axial scans, has not added significant information.
