Abstract

Brain tumours are amongst the most devastating and difficult forms of cancer to control. Although some human gliomas respond to adjuvant therapy With cytotoxic agents, they invariably recur. These failures may be the result of inadequate drug delivery but may also occur because of the development of drug resistance within the tumour. Apparent drug resistance may occur because cells are able to effectively repair drug-induced damage (1) or because of the presence of a number of different drug resistant clones within the tumour (2, 3, 4, 5). The presence of such heterogeneity should be considered in the development of in vitro and in vivo models for the study of tumour cell drug sensitivity.
